Wondering about Canada tourist visa validity? Learn how long a Canada visitor visa is valid and how long you can stay — clear, up-to-date guidance for applicants from Pakistan, backed by EasyVisa.pk’s visa experts.
A Canada tourist visa — officially a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) — can be valid for up to 10 years, but the real limit is set by your passport and biometrics. Here is what matters most before you apply.
Up to 10 years for a multiple-entry visitor visa.
Until your passport or biometrics expire — whichever comes first.
Usually up to six months on each visit to Canada.
A visa officer at IRCC, based on your application.
A border services officer at the port of entry.
Single-entry or multiple-entry, decided case-by-case.
This is the distinction that trips up most travellers. Your visa validity and how long you can stay are two different things.
The lifespan of the visa stamped in your passport — the window during which you can travel to Canada.
How long you can remain in Canada after you arrive — a separate clock that starts on each entry.
For years, applicants assumed a Canada visitor visa came with an automatic 10-year, multiple-entry stamp. That assumption is now outdated. In 2024, IRCC updated its guidance so that multiple-entry is no longer the default — officers now decide each application on a case-by-case basis.
One-time trip or frequent returns, such as visiting close family in Canada.
Stable income or a financially established host to support repeated visits.
Any health conditions or treatment plans relevant to the trip.
Your ties to Pakistan — employment, property, and family that show you will return.
Strong, well-documented ties to your home country remain the most influential factor in securing a longer, multiple-entry visa.
Use a passport with long validity — your visa cannot outlast it.
Complete your biometrics, which also cap how long your visa is valid.
Document strong ties to Pakistan and sufficient funds.
Submit your application; you are automatically considered for multiple entry.
A visa officer decides your visa type and validity case-by-case.
For applicants from Pakistan, validity almost always tracks your passport. A full 10-year visa is possible but uncommon if your passport has only a few years left — so plan around your passport's expiry date, not the headline "10 years."
Worked example: if your passport expires in four years, even a multiple-entry visa will typically be issued to align with that passport — about four years, not ten. Renewing your passport later does not automatically extend the visa.
Your application strength — and the validity you are offered — depends heavily on documentation. Before you apply, it helps to have your biometrics for Canada completed and your finances and ties clearly evidenced.
Knowing the current Canada visa fees and gathering proof of employment, property, and family ties all support a longer, multiple-entry outcome.
